Plug in Hybrid cars
|
Last year someone on here was extolling the virtues of plug in hybrid cars - Spandex Sidney I think.
I know as a company car they are unbeatable for tax purposes but I wondered if any of you lot had day to day experience of these and how good or bad they are.
Looking through what's available it seems the choice is now much wider than the Prius and other Jap crap with MB and BMW amongst others getting in on the act.

Comma, I am a West Ham United supporter, of course. I appreciate that this is an odd concept on here these days when Euro politics and electric cars seem more relevant.

I'm looking at the hybrid Volvo XC90 as the combined fuel consumption figures rival those of the diesel version and I'm going to be doing a ton of driving across the continent in the coming year.
Also, from what I've heard, the electric motor delivers its power instantly, making for a much more dynamic driving experience.
Watch me on the new Top Gear, starting May 2016 on BBC2.

Gank, it has nothing to do with West Ham.
That's why I posted on the Off Topic Forum - duh.

New Tesla 3 released today
Looks like it could be a game changer for them. But on the whole electric cars don't have enough range, power, or longevity to seem to be a viable option away from low emission engines which most manufacturers produce now.

If I had the opportunity to connect to the AC overnight, I would have the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV. It would reduce my petrol bill for my 21 mile commute by 80%. But I live in a flat with underground car parking so not possible. I do have a Lexus RX400 hybrid which I bought after owning the RX300. The RX300 did 16-20MPG The RX400h does 30-34MPG The latest RX450h does 40-45MPG

Yes but have you seen the price of the current models ! much rather have a V8 making noise if im honest
This Tesla 3 should be interesting though, as it looks the first of the four models that offer a credible alternative to the typical cars in its class

I have a MB C350e company car.
Ignore the 134 mpg quoted by merc.
Around town, stop start journeys, easily clears 99mpg (thats the most the trip computer will display).
On motorways, 40-45mpg - which isn't too bad considering its performance and spec.

Blimey, those Lexus figures aren't great, are they?
I've been borrowing a pretty standard issue road-warrior saloon for a few weeks during a project, and I am currently averaging 58mpg without trying, even with crappy roadworks.
I like Lexi, too! :)

Be good to see how it does perform. Been keen to see electric cars come on the market and change the whole vehicle market but the limitations on electric seem to outweigh the benefit.

Re: Plug in Hybrid cars

For starters, a car is either Hybrid or plug-in. Hybrids use gas to charge the battery or once the car reaches a certain speed (usually on highways).
At least in the states, it does not make financial sense currently to own either type of car. The difference you spend on getting the hybrid/electric does not overcome what you save on gas until roughly 10 years. obviously the price of gas can significantly affect that number, but the tin-hat side of me suspects that until we reach peak-oil, the price of gas will stay sufficiently low to make electric financially impractical.
If you're not doing it for financial reasons, go with an electric especially a Tesla if you can afford it.

Not great but it is a powerful 4X4 (0-60 in under 8 seconds) and not a fake one like those that are just shaped as such. The Mitsubishi has a mpg stated at 140+ but I believe real world has it more like 70-90mph. It all depends on the type of driving you mostly do.

I hear some of the newer models have a 'kissed a girl' function which allows you to find out what it's like to have kissed a girl son

Here's a FUN fact.
Electric cars were first in production 100 years ago. However, John D. Rockefeller (Standard Oil) saw to it that it became an unviable alternative to his product.
Just think of how different history could have been without that evil man's intervention.
